Changes are afoot on East Broadway. Parade Ground, a short lived experiment on 187 East Broadway, has closed up shop. Meanwhile, Allegra LaViola, a gallery just down the street, will reopen as Sargent’s Daughter on November 6th. LaViola ran the gallery under her own name for six years and will close after its final show this month. Sargent’s Daughters will move into her East Broadway space and is a joint venture between LaViola and Meredith Rosen. Rosen was the director of BravinLee for four years.
The gallery’s name refers to the painter John Singer Sargent and will reflect the gallery’s focus on contemporary art with a strong historical lineage. Like Sargent, the work will challenge current aesthetic conventions.
